Parasite Control & Prevention

Protect your pet year-round against internal and external parasites.

Parasite control is vital to providing your dog or cat with protection against harmful parasites. Parasites, both internal and external, can pose a variety of health risks to your pet. From internal heartworms to external ticks, we can recommend broad-spectrum preventive medication that protects against them all.

Why does my pet need parasite preventives?

A simple way you can help keep your dog or cat healthy is by protecting them against parasites. Heartworms, fleas, ticks, and other internal and external parasites are much more than just pests. They can cause life-threatening conditions in your pet and family. During your visit, we can recommend the best preventive regimen for your dog or cat based on lifestyle and risk factors. We can also provide expert advice on keeping your whole household safe from parasitic infections. Set up an appointment with us to discuss parasite prevention, or call us to refill your dog or cat’s medication at 905-945-8631.

Are natural remedies effective for parasite prevention?

Although natural remedies can offer some protection or repellency against parasites, they are not nearly as effective as prescription products. In addition, natural remedies often need to be applied far more frequently than once a month, making them less convenient. Some, such as garlic, can actually be harmful to your dog or cat. Just because a product has “natural” on its label doesn’t mean it’s safe. Please consult with our veterinarians before using any over-the-counter preventives on your dog or cat.

Why does my cat or dog need preventives if they’ve never been infected?

Just because you can’t see parasites doesn’t mean the threat to their health doesn’t exist. Fleas and ticks are not just minor nuisances. They can transmit serious and sometimes life-threatening diseases, some of which can be passed to people. Even indoor-only pets are at risk because fleas and ticks can hitch a ride inside on your clothing, shoes, or other pets. Keeping your dog or cat on a monthly preventive is the best way to protect them and your entire family against these parasites.
